Robert realizes two weeks after arriving in Texas for the holidays (before the start of filming) that he isn't going back to Los Angeles.
Seeing the kids for such a long period of time instead of just a single week, stolen from a month of sex and friends, reminds Robert of how much of himself he'd left in Texas in the first place. All the moments of confusion he's had over the last year stem from the fact that even though his marriage to Elizabeth was and is definitely over, it was not the smartest of moves to go to LA. He'd never liked the city, never enjoyed visiting when he was doing work on his films. At the time it had seemed like the logical step but right now, as he rinses dishes and puts them into the dishwasher, he can't think of a single reason for leaving Texas.
Shannyn and Zane are amazing people and great friends. He's gone through quite a bit with both of them, a lot of which still makes him blush and look down sheepishly with a chuckle, and he doesn't regret any of it.
He only wishes he'd realized sooner just how badly he needed to be back in Texas. With his family and his work. His work has never actually been work. It's always been enjoyable and for a man like himself, who is passionate about making movies, it was almost like cutting off an arm when he decided to take a break. It had just seemed like the thing to do. Finish up the divorce and then take some time off. He wanted to get to know himself but what he didn't realize was that his work and his family is as much a part of himself as anything has ever been.
Robert looks up when he hears a sharp squeal. He can see Rebel chasing after his two older brothers through the kitchen window and Robert knows he's not leaving again. He wants to make sure he is around when Rebel hits the age where he realizes whether Daddy is there or not. Rocket had been angry when he'd left but, being the eldest, he'd taken it upon himself to be the man of the house, taking care of his little brothers and his mom when he could. Racer took it all in the same way he takes everything; he'd asked a thousand questions and then, obviously satisfied, bounced off to play. But Robert knows they need him as much as he needs them so it isn't even a decision to stay. It's a natural choice.
Robert smiles and turns the dishwasher on before heading outside, grabbing Rebel up under one arm before stomping off after Racer and Rocket who have holed themselves up in their fort, constructed from old film canisters and chopped firewood. He has a few phonecalls to make but they can wait until later. |

Texans approve gay marriage ban
And I'm reminded, once again, that the majority of the people living in what I consider to be the best state are blind, ignorant and scared.
It's enough to make me feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things because I was part of the minority which is not represented at all in the result. I know we all just have to keep pushing forward in the hopes that one day ignorance will be removed from the world but really, when we continue to elect officials and pass laws that encourage this ignorance, it gets kind of hard. |

Tequila is the best fucking drink on the planet as far as Robert and Quentin are concerned but The Drink's two latest victims may not be singing the same tune come morning. They're currently holed up in Quentin's usual booth at the Establishment's bar, half empty bottle of tequila on the table between them. They'd started out ordering rounds of shots from an annoyed looking waiter and then just asked him to bring them the whole bottle.

Shannyn's helping the boys clean their rooms but I think she's just using the excuse to sneak a nap. She wasn't exactly happy when Racer woke her at 8 this morning after Lizzie dropped them off. She's still recovering from the concert last night.
Was browsing through the journals when Racer came out from cleaning and peeked over my shoulder.
The result? I'm the soon-to-be proud owner of "Mariachi Duckies" as he's named them. Watch me as I buy toys in order to grab his attention away from other things.

He says they look like me. I'm not really sure I can disagree.
I also got a call today and it looks like we'll be doing Sin City 2 and Sin City 3 at the same time. It'll cut the cost and work in the end but the idea of having two projects right now is daunting. I was ready for one. It'll also mean more of a 'move' back to San Antonio than a short relocation. Not sure how I feel about that yet. |

If there's one sound that Shannyn can't ignore, it's the sound of her stomach growling petulantly from below her sleeping shirt. She flips on the lamp next to her bed, debating whether or not it's worth it to wake Robert up to cook her something that actually tastes good or whether she should hazard her own cooking.

To: shan From: robertrodriguez Subject: San Antonio and Green Day
Hey, Shan. What do you say to a return trip to San Antonio that not only includes three little boys who would love to see you again but a trip to the SBC Center to see the boys of Green Day again? (Say one thing about the after party having anything to do with why I want to see them again and I'll gladly leave you alone in the mosh pit at the concert. Never to be seen again.) The concert's on the 21st and I'll be flying out on the 19th, returning to LA on the 24th.
What do you say? Should I make reservations for two seats or one? |

I just accepted the studio's offer to make Sin City 2.
I've been avoiding going back to work for awhile, almost obsessed with getting the other areas of my life perfect before taking on another project. But then I realized the only time my life is the way I want it is when I'm working. It lets me burn off energy and I really think it will help calm my head down. After I sit in a room for 10 hours cutting and re-cutting a scene to get it how I want it, I leave with my head a little less confused than it was before I started. More often than not, anyway.
I already had a talk with Frank and he's really excited to get to work choosing and scripting out the stories we're going to use this time. And, if a few of the cast members from the first movie are interested, we might already have a lot of the key roles filled. I think I'm going to talk with Salma to see if we can find a spot for her.
I'm looking at a few months of pre-production before filming starts. That'll give me time to settle things in LA before I move back here to San Antonio for filming for a month or two, and then editing and post-production work which will be another 4 months.
Think I'm gonna spend the rest of the day swimming with the kids. I don't think I've been as good a father as I can be as of late with my mind elsewhere. I already feel more focused. |
